Wire feed welding otherwise known as mig welding is a very fast technique of putting down filler metal. It is much faster and quicker than other welding processes.
Automated welding robots can be setup to do MIG with breath taking results. Welds so perfect and done so fast it is fascinating to watch. These robotic cells are used throughout the manufacturing world for car and truck manufacturers right down to the smaller job shop type engineering works.
The technical name is GMAW or Gas Metal Arc Welding.
It is defined as a continuous feed of electrically charged wire into the welding arc. This constant feed of wire allows the electrical connection to heat the metal and create beads of melted wire, which turn into welds when cooled.
Here’s why it is a very popular process to use:
1. Is reasonably simple to do.
2. The action of mig welding requires a lot less time as compared to the stick or tig welding process.
3. Is less expensive and more economical.
4. To increase productivity and throughput semi automated or fully automated devices can be fitted.
5. A shielding gas can be used in the process to create smoothly finished welds.
The shielding gas provides you with better control over the spatter of the molten pool of metal that is created. A variety of gases can currently be selected for this type of welding.
It is a very versatile machine because you can work with a whole range of different types of metals. The most commonly welded materials using this process are stainless steel, mild steel and hardened steel such wear plate and aluminum.
Before you buy a machine you need to first think about what you plan to weld with it. As the thicker the metal the more power you are going to need.
I always like to say to people to buy a machine which is slightly more powerful than what they think are going to need to use right now. This way it sort of future proofs them for later on down the track when they need to tackle larger projects. I know it always happens to me, I go and buy something and then a few months later I say to myself gee I should have bought the bigger or better version.
You will also be required to buy tips and liners to keep your equipment working efficiently, and to extend the life of your mig welding gun. Keeping your welding consumables clean is very important to stop wire feed welding problems. So you must make sure that you have good quality contact tips as some of the cheap stuff is absolute rubbish, they cause erratic welding wire feed. And sure you remove any rust, oil, paint or grease from the metal that you want to do mig welding on.
Mig welding is so readily accepted in the manufacturing industry and it has seen many different applications. From specialized welding situations to the man at home in his shed doing some DIY mig welding is here.
